This Sunday, we return to our sermon series on mental health. The Bible reading for this week ends with these poignant words: “darkness is my closest friend”.  You can’t read far in the Book of Psalms before you come across a chapter like Psalm 88. In fact, there are around 65 Psalms of Lament in the Bible, making these the most common of all the Psalms. They are a mixture of mostly individual songs of lament and also some communal songs too. The writers weren’t afraid to voice their complaints and their woes to God, and the Psalms can give us the language to do the same when we are feeling distant from God and trapped alone in the darkness.
